DOGS for ADOPTION
Harrisburg City Dogs:
Hoping for Happy Endings
For several weeks in late 2011 and early 2012, when there was no animal control contract in the City of Harrisburg, CPAA stepped up to rescue several dogs that otherwise had no place to go. About one-quarter of the dogs were suffering extreme medical problems, requiring immediate treatment and, in some cases, surgery.
One of those dogs was Dusty Rose, who was found near a dumpster on New Year’s Eve suffering with a prolapsed uterus. Thankfully, when word of her condition spread, people gave generously, allowing CPAA to cover the costs of Dusty Rose’s surgery and to provide medical care for other rescued city dogs. We hope we can count on your generosity again, as we need funds to help cover the costs of boarding the dogs you see on this page. Please click here to donate to our general fund - any amount helps!
Dusty Rose is now healthy and living in her brand new home. She found her happy ending…won’t you help us find the same kind of happy ending for these sweethearts?

This list will grow over time, so please be sure to scroll through the list to see the latest dogs - we'll be listing the ones who've been on this list the longest at the top, so newer dogs will be at the bottom. You may also want to check out our HAPPY ENDINGS at the very bottom of this page - where we post information on the dogs who've found loving homes.
Thank you! |

Jackson
Update! Much has changed since Jackson's initial Petfinder bio. Jackson went to a new foster home after one of the resident dogs in his prior home became rather fixated on Jackson - who could blame him. Jackson went to a new foster home with 6 other dogs and a cat and it turns out, Jackson's is okay with cats, but he just likes to chase. Jackson was also working towards his Canine Good Citizen and living with two small children. Sadly, Jackson's new foster family had a severe medical emergency and Jackson had to go to a boarding kennel as there were no open foster homes.
Jackson is such a sweet boy, loves people, kids, other dogs, and cats (he does chase them). He has been in a home since he was rescued as a stray and the thought of this sweet boy in a kennel is heartbreaking! If you can open up your heart and home to Jackson, he will repay in loads of love and devotion, please consider this great guy.
Jackson is a very friendly and lovable dog! He loves to play fetch and his favorite toy is a squeaky rubber chicken. He loves to chew real and rawhide bones, and go for long walks.
He does not mark much when we walk, and he's house-broken and crate-trained. Jackson is friendly to other dogs, but protective of his things. He jumps and mouths when excited, but this can be resolved with gentle training. He loves people and kids, and is also good with strangers. He rarely barks, and loves to cuddle on the couch. He takes food nicely and is learning to wait for treats. He knows the "Sit!" and "Stay!" commands. |

Homer
Homer is a sweet young Pit Bull Terrier who is currently in a boarding kennel awaiting a family, either foster or adoptive. He was rescued as a stray and found himself homeless again when his guardian got into a dispute with a roommate and left him behind. The roommate he was left with did not want him and kept him crated most of the day. An urgent plea went out to CPAA as it was indicated she could keep him no longer. As there was no foster home available, he was placed into boarding.
Homer is approximately 14 months old, and is scared at the kennel. He is the most gorgeous chocolate color and looks like he may be a pit bull/lab mix. He is up to date on his vaccinations, heartworm negative, and neutered. He is so young and has had so much turmoil and strife in his short life already. Homer would prefer to be your one and only dog, and he desperately needs out of the kennel and into a home, be it a foster or adoption. |

Ruby
Ruby who was found huddling under a porch seeking warmth in Harrisburg City. She was taken by City Police to the Harrisburg Temporary Shelter and shortly thereafter, found a wonderful foster home. Ruby has had a rough start in life but she hasn't let that slow her down. She is a 40 lb cuddle bug who loves affection and human contact. She is also very smart and has mastered sit, shake and the most impressive stay, her foster Mom can go into other rooms and Ruby will hold her stay.
Ruby has been evaluated by a trainer and found to be a healthy, energetic, and smart 6 month old puppy. As she is a puppy, she will need a family willing to work with her and offer her kind correction as she learns to navigate the world around her. She is already house trained and does very well in her crate as she goes into it willingly and does not bark or whimper. Ruby is said to be doing very well in her foster home in which she resides with three adults.
Ruby has definitely had a tough beginning but she is ready for the next chapter in her life - finding her forever family. Ruby loves to walk, play fetch, cuddle on your lap, and impress with her amazing ability to learn new tricks. She would make a great addition to any family with the time and comittment to give Ruby the love, exercise and training every impressionable young girl like Ruby needs. |

Hope
Hope is young Pit Bull who came to us after being hit by a car in Harrisburg City. One of her rear legs was degloved and she required surgery and care. Hope is house-trained and has benefited from guidance and patience. Hope has certainly had a rough start in life and at such a young age - but she is clearly ready to be in her forever home and is seeking a family who will offer her a lifelong commitment in exchange for loads of love, kisses, laughs, and friendship.
Update 04/12/2013: Hope has been through some big changes lately including a new kennel, Duffy's Bed and Biscuit, where she is undergoing some great training and socialization. It turns out that little Hope likes other dogs and was just not properly socialized. She now enjoys her days playing with new canine friends and the only thing missing in her life is a home and family to call her own. She is still a very young girl and needs someone to show her boundaries and work with her while she continues to blossom and mature. Hope is in a training/boarding kennel and is receiving the best possible training with Patrick Duff. You can follow her progress on their Facebook page by clicking here.
Hope loves people, kids, and now we are happy to report, other dogs, she is still not a cat fan though. She is a beautiful, intelligent, and energetic girl who has had quite a rough start in life. She is more than ready to be part of a family and she is "hoping" to find her furever family very soon.

Charlie
Charlie is a distinguished gentleman who has had a less than dignified year. He was found as a stray last winter and was none too pleased with that situation. He was relieved to find the warmth of a foster home, but not as thrilled to head off to HOPE school. But, after just a week or so of living with his new friends and teachers, we began to see a whole new Charlie. The sad, scared dog was slowly disappearing and being replaced by a wagging tail and a little boy who was eager to accept petting, snuggling and lots of attention. He's a confident, brave little man now who is ready for the next chapter of his life to get started right away.

Madison
This is Madison who was rescued from the City of Harrisburg. Madison is an absolutely stunning girl and is very sweet with people. She is not very sure of dogs and at this time it is believed that she would prefer to be an only dog. She is currently in a boarding situation and is awaiting entry into the HOPE program where she will work on basic skills, her ability to interact with other dogs, and address any other issues that she may have.
At the kennel staff there report that she loves belly rubs, loves playing outside, and interacting with people. She has received vet care and is up to date on her shots and spayed.
Madison is looking for a great home where she will have lots of attention from people and in exchange she will give you her all. We will continue to update on her progress in the HOPE program and encourage all to give this great and deserving gal a second chance at a life she has never had.
Adoption application, home visit and adoption fee required. If you would like to apply for adoption, please complete the online application at www.furryfriendsnetwork.comLook under HOW TO ADOPT. |

Nash
Hi, my name is Nash. My nickname is “love bunny” because I like to cuddle! I am an 8 year-old Hound, Lab, American PitBull Terrier mix. I was rescued from a shelter in the northern part of Pennsylvania that wasn’t very nice. It was a trailer. Someone cut off my tail, but I am not sure when that happened. I am housebroken, crate- trained, know basic commands, love to go on walks, good with people and children, and some other dogs. My foster home has 5 other dogs, and I get along with all but one of them. I just love to be with people, so I would do best in a home where I wasn’t by myself most of the day. I have an auto-immune skin condition called Pemphigus that is controlled with low doses of Prednisone. Other than that minor issue, I am a healthy guy! I am neutered, up to date on all of my shots, heartworm negative, and flea free! So…..if you think I might be the guy for you, email Zella, my foster mom, at zscooter@verizon.net or call 717-574-5844. Thanks for considering me!

Murphy
Loyal and eager to please is the best way to describe Murphy. This young pit bull has such a sweet face and soulful brown eyes…he will quickly wiggle his way into your heart.
Murphy was found as a stray in the City of Harrisburg and was severely emaciated when he was rescued. Perhaps a bit over exuberant about his good fortune, he practiced the high jump every time a person came to greet him! But thanks to some solid training and guidance at Duffy’s Bed and Biscuit in Hummelstown, he is proving what a great dog he can be. He quickly learned basic “sit” and “stay” commands and is well on his way to mastering an off-leash heel. Murphy also has the opportunity to socialize with other dogs on a daily basis and has made several new canine friends!
Murphy is a neutered male pit bull who is approximately 1-2 years old. He is on the smaller side, weighing in at about 45 pounds. Murphy will need a person or family that will continue to give him the guidance and boundaries he needs. But he’ll return the favor ten-fold! |

Miss Precious
Miss Precious is a sweet, adorable, and at times a little sassy, boxer-pit bull mix. This young lady has had at least one litter of pups, and she was a great mama. But now she is ready to move on with her life as a free-wheeling bachelorette.
This girl just wants to have fun! Precious was rescued from some not-so-nice living conditions, and because of her unknown health history, she has not yet been introduced to other dogs. However, we are expecting a clean bill of health for her shortly and then we will find out more about how she interacts with other dogs.
She has been a bit nervous about meeting new people, but her foster mom is working to help build her confidence and to encourage people to give her a little time to get comfortable with them. Once she does feel comfortable, she is a love! This girl would love to find a home where she can get plenty of attention and exercise. She absolutely loves toys – rubber toys, squeaky toys, balls, you name it. Just make sure they’re durable toys, or you’ll be getting her a new one every day.
Precious is house trained, crate trained and is learning to walk well on leash. She is very food motivated and will be more than happy to sit, give paw and lie down. Precious is well on her way to putting her past behind her; she just needs a companion to join her. |

Guardian
Guardian is a large handsome light chocolate beefcake, and he could not be sweeter. He is about 2 years old and 100 pounds of pure love. Poor Guardian was kept in a junk yard his whole life, with not much food or any vet care. He was saved by some rescue angels who found out about him from the neighbors who were feeding him. Guardian gets along great with other dogs but likes to chase cats. So, a cat free home would be best. Do you have room in your heart, home, and bed for this big hunk of love?
Guardian is neutered, up-to-date with his shots, and he's house-trained.
UPDATE! Guardian is now enrolled in CPAA's Hounds of Prison Education Program. Check out Guardian's weekly updates at Hope Dog's site by clicking here.

He's a spunky, loving dog who is looking for someone to give him a second chance at a loving home. Sparkey is neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and up to date with preventatives.

Michelle
Michelle's story is about hope, and finding the silver lining within every cloud. She still needs our help, and we can if we set our minds to it!
Michelle is an approximately 4-year old American Staffordshire terrier who was saved from a horrific situation that most people would not even dream exists. Michelle is one of the "Pit 6", as this small group of dogs has been called, that was saved from a dog fighting ring in Baltimore.
Although we do not believe she was used for fighting, it appears she was instead used for repeated breeding, she still survived this horrific existence. When her original owner was charged with dog fighting and other crimes, Michelle and the others were held in Baltimore County's Animal Control facility for 2 years awaiting his final conviction. Because the dogs were considered as evidence in the case, they were not in a normal shelter environment. Instead, they were caged without any real human interaction, including no walks outside, and received only food and water.
Once the case came to trial and the owner was convicted these poor dogs were going to be euthanized since they were no longer needed as evidence. Michelle has proven to be a wonderful dog in spite of her very sad and torturous life. She has worked for many months now with a professional trainer as well as with members of our organization and she has proven to be a very adoptable girl. As with any dog that has been kenneled for a long period of time, Michelle will need lots of and love and some patience as she learns to adjust to life in a home.
Fortunately, she has already displayed her ability to learn quickly and adapt well and is extremely receptive to a loving environment. Michelle is sweet and endearing, and she is inquisitive-- having never had a life, and likes to explore and smell. She likes to receive attention and is affectionate herself!! We are in desperate search of a loving home this girl, who has been written about and photographed on the front page of the Baltimore Sun newspaper, because their story was so unimaginable and horrible.
Because of Michelle's background and history, we do require she be placed in a home where she is the only dog, but a sweet girl like this deserves to be in home where she is the center of attention.
Michelle's story is only a story of salvation and triumph if we can find her a home - until then she continues to await her final step to finding a real, loving home.
Please help us make Michelle's story one of redemption and success, and with a happy ending. Help us find her home!! |
