Harrisburg City Dogs:
Hoping for Happy Endings

For several weeks in late 2011 and early 2012, when there was no animal control contract in the City of Harrisburg, CPAA stepped up to rescue several dogs that otherwise had no place to go. About one-quarter of the dogs were suffering extreme medical problems, requiring immediate treatment and, in some cases, surgery.

One of those dogs was Dusty Rose, who was found near a dumpster on New Year’s Eve suffering with a prolapsed uterus. Thankfully, when word of her condition spread, people gave generously, allowing CPAA to cover the costs of Dusty Rose’s surgery and to provide medical care for other rescued city dogs. We hope we can count on your generosity again, as we need funds to help cover the costs of boarding the dogs you see on this page. Please click here to donate to our general fund - any amount helps!

Dusty Rose is now healthy and living in her brand new home. She found her happy ending…won’t you help us find the same kind of happy ending for these sweethearts?

This list will grow over time, so please be sure to scroll through the list to see the latest dogs - we'll be listing the ones who've been on this list the longest at the top, so newer dogs will be at the bottom. You may also want to check out our HAPPY ENDINGS at the very bottom of this page - where we post information on the dogs who've found loving homes.
Thank you!

Jackson
Jackson is a very friendly and lovable dog! He loves to play fetch and his favorite toy is a squeaky rubber chicken. He loves to chew real and rawhide bones, and go for long walks. He does not mark much when we walk, and he's house-broken and crate-trained.

Jackson is friendly to other dogs, but protective of his things. He jumps and mouths when excited, but this can be resolved with gentle training. He loves people and kids, and is also good with strangers. He rarely barks, and loves to cuddle on the couch. He takes food nicely and is learning to wait for treats. He knows the "Sit!" command, and we are working on "Stay!" He would love to be someone's only dog.

Homer
Homer is a sweet young Pit Bull Terrier who is currently in a boarding kennel awaiting a family, either foster or adoptive. He was rescued as a stray and found himself homeless again when his guardian got into a dispute with a roommate and left him behind.  The roommate he was left with did not want him and kept him crated most of the day.  An urgent plea went out to CPAA as it was indicated she could keep him no longer.  As there was no foster home available, he was placed into boarding.

Homer is approximately 14 months old,  and is scared at the kennel.  He is the most gorgeous chocolate color and looks like he may be a pit bull/lab mix.  He is up to date on his vaccinations, heartworm negative, and neutered.  He is so young and has had so much turmoil and strife in his short life already. He desperately needs out of the kennel and into a home, be it a foster or adoption.

Checkers
Checkers is a sweetheart. He is a very mellow boy with lots of love to give. He is good with other dogs and cats...even when they bat him in the face. Checkers is a young, pit bull mix who was found on City Island in Harrisburg after being abandoned in the cold. Checkers was lucky to have been rescued by CPAA volunteers and now they're looking for a home where he will be loved and safe for the rest of his life. Checkers is playful and energetic, but not rambunctious. He has shown wonderful manners so far. Checkers needs a break. He needs someone to look into those big, brown eyes and whisper into thiose giant ears that he is home. Please help Checkers find his way home.

Checkers is available for adoption through CPAA and the HOPE Program. We consider potential adopters from within a two hour radius of the Camp Hill, PA area.  All adoptions of HOPE Dogs include a private training session with the HOPE Program trainer and free access to her services for as long and as often as needed. All dogs are spayed/neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. A training manual is included, as well as detailed notes from the inmate handlers.

Ruby
Ruby who was found huddling under a porch seeking warmth in Harrisburg City. She was taken by City Police to the Harrisburg Temporary Shelter and shortly thereafter, found a wonderful foster home. Ruby has had a rough start in life but she hasn't let that slow her down. She is a 40 lb cuddle bug who loves affection and human contact. She is also very smart and has mastered sit, shake and the most impressive stay, her foster Mom can go into other rooms and Ruby will hold her stay.

Ruby has been evaluated by a trainer and found to be a healthy, energetic, and smart 6 month old puppy. As she is a puppy, she will need a family willing to work with her and offer her kind correction as she learns to navigate the world around her. She is already house trained and does very well in her crate as she goes into it willingly and does not bark or whimper. Ruby is said to be doing very well in her foster home in which she resides with three adults.

Ruby has definitely had a tough beginning but she is ready for the next chapter in her life - finding her forever family. Ruby loves to walk, play fetch, cuddle on your lap, and impress with her amazing ability to learn new tricks. She would make a great addition to any family with the time and comittment to give Ruby the love, exercise and training every impressionable young girl like Ruby needs.

Bettis
Hi, my name is Bettis! Bubba, my foster mommy, says that I am just like the guy I was named after – a big, handsome guy who is loving, loyal, eager to please, takes instruction well, and a future Hall of Famer. I live with two other dogs in my foster home. One of them is Seamus - he's a lot of fun. We love to chase each other around the yard. Then there is Princess Alexandria. Seamus told me she is something called "royalty." I think that's another word for being bossy (she quickly taught me that she is in charge and I listened to her). Bubba said to tell you these important things: I am less than two years old, about 65 pounds, housebroken, neutered, I know “sit” and am working on a bunch of new commands like “stay,” “touch,” “leave it,” and “off.” My favorite things are snuggling, giving kisses, playing tug of war, playing with Seamus, eating, working on my commands with Bubba, and going for walks and car rides.

Shadow
Shadow is a Chihuahua mix, vet estimates around 2 years old. He was 9 lbs. when I picked him up, and he's now 10.5 lbs after several weeks in a foster home.

The fosters called him Shadow because he follows them around. He is frightened of uniforms - foster dad works as security guard and Shadow was very upset the first time he came home from work, but he is over that now. He barks at other dogs when out on walks. I would say he is apprehensive of strangers but once he finds you are a nice human he is very affectionate. He is neutered and also housebroken.

Louie
Louie is a sweet, sophisticated, calm, and absolutely charming 7-year old, 40 lb. Pit Bill Mix.  He was previously rescued from a very bad situation and due to trauma from that experience, he lost his tail which makes him resemble a boxer.  He is tan and white but his blue undercoat comes through in his muzzle and behind his ears.

Louie is an absolute joy to walk on a leash.  He walks with you and shows little interest in anything other than the person at the other end of the leash.  He has lived with cats and many dogs.  He does seem to prefer smaller dogs and may be better suited to a female sibling or a smaller dog.

Louie loves to snuggle and just be near you.  He absolutely loves people and is quite the cuddler. Louie will make a great addition to any family and due to his calm nature, he should be well-suited to either a home or an apartment.

Hope
Hope is an adorable 4-month old Pit Bull puppy who came to us after being hit by a car in Harrisburg City. One of her rear legs was degloved and she required surgery and care.  She is now fully recovered and ready for her forever home.

She is currently in a foster home and is doing well. There is a young child there and Hope does great with kids. Hope's response to cats has made it clear she should go to a cat-free home, but it is believed that Hope will make an excellent sibling in a home with other dogs. She is also house-trained and fully vetted.

As she is a young and energetic puppy, a training class is recommended for her future family - as well as patience and guidance. Hope has certainly had a rough start in life and at such a young age - but she is clearly ready to be in her forever home and is seeking a family who will offer her a lifelong commitment in exchange for loads of love, kisses, laughs, and friendship.

Charlie
Found wandering the Harrisburg City streets with his buddy Jackson. Charlie is a Corgi/Chihuahua mix who loves exploring outside when he goes on walks. Most times Charlie will be found laying around the house and sleeping. Charlie is a slow moving guy but still likes when his foster mom rolls a ball for him to play fetch. Would benefit from a fenced in yard. He can be apprehensive with a lot of handling so would do better in a house with older children. Crate trained and House trained.

Jackson
Found wandering the Harrisburg City streets with his buddy Charlie who is also up for adoption.  Jackson is an energetic Jack Russell Terrier, who loves to play fetch and to go for long walks. Would do best with a family who will provide lots of exercise. Jackson would also benefit with a fenced yard where he can run and play. Gets along well with the other dogs. Crate trained and working on house breaking.

Buddy
Hi, I'm Buddy. I'm approximately 3 years old and I'm a Pit Bull/Mastiff mix, but my foster mom thinks I bark like a hound dog. I'm a laid back guy who gets along well with my foster dog brother and sister. I have a tendency to howl when I meet another dog or cat for the first time, but my foster mom is working on teaching me better manners. I like to run and play but my favorite thing in the world is curling up with someone who loves me and just relaxing. I'm told that I'm a pillow hog, but your lap is my favorite place to sleep.

I'm working on learning basic commands, like sit, stay and down. I'm crate trained and housebroken. I even do a little tap dancing when its time to go for a walk. My foster mom says I pull a little on our walks, so she gave me a back pack which helps a lot. I love meeting people, going for car rides and walking around pet stores. People tell me how handsome I am and sometimes they even give me cookies for being such a good boy!

I have a lot of love to give and I'd like a home that will love me furever!

I think I'd do best in a house with at least one other dog friend, as sometimes I get a little lonely. Cats are okay, but sometimes my whining makes them swat at me. I guess I'm a little excited with them, but we're working on that too! I need someone who's willing to help me continue to learn and in return I'll be the best boy you've ever had! Hopefully I'll see you soon!!!

Hope
Hope was found as a stray in Harrisburg. Some kind people at the Subway Cafe took pity on her and started feeding her. They were not able to find her owner or a new home for her so they asked for help. Hope came into foster care and has since been spayed, courtesy of the Central PA Animal Alliance De-sex in the City program, and been vaccinated and tested for heartworm.

Hope is a young, playful, energetic dog. She gets along well with all types of doggy companions and is gentle with children. She listens well and responds well to training. Hope would prefer a home with no cats. Hope is also a very proud graduate of the HOPE program and is currently in boarding situation awaiting her forever home.

Adoption application, home visit and adoption fee required. If you would like to apply for adoption, please complete the online application at www.furryfriendsnetwork.comLook under HOW TO ADOPT.

Madison
This is Madison who was rescued from the City of Harrisburg. Madison is an absolutely stunning girl and is very sweet with people. She is not very sure of dogs and at this time it is believed that she would prefer to be an only dog. She is currently in a boarding situation and is awaiting entry into the HOPE program where she will work on basic skills, her ability to interact with other dogs, and address any other issues that she may have.

At the kennel staff there report that she loves belly rubs, loves playing outside, and interacting with people. She has received vet care and is up to date on her shots and spayed.

Madison is looking for a great home where she will have lots of attention from people and in exchange she will give you her all. We will continue to update on her progress in the HOPE program and encourage all to give this great and deserving gal a second chance at a life she has never had.

Adoption application, home visit and adoption fee required. If you would like to apply for adoption, please complete the online application at www.furryfriendsnetwork.comLook under HOW TO ADOPT.

Trinity & Tubby
Great things come in pairs and this mother and son are priceless!!! Ten year old Trinity and her five year old son Tubby were surrendered on March 2nd because their previous owners were moving. This dynamic duo are a versatile bunch. They are accustomed to living as companions but they also have an affinity for working a herd of cattle as well! Both dogs are extrmely affectionate with friendly dispositions. Trinity is the smaller of the two and she just wants to be loved. Tubby is equally charming with lots of charisma and a phenomenal personality! Both dogs are accustomed to children of all ages but they need a home without cats. Two times the love, what could be better??? Commitment phobes need not apply.

Maddie Mae
Sweet little Maddie Mae was found as a stray in Manhein Township during the winter. She is an adorable, calm, sweet, and entertaining dog. She seems to have learned some clever and amusing tricks in the true Jack Russell tradition, including a belly crawl and a funny move where she throws herself down on her back. She is also very fond of chasing the laser pointer.

She does great with other dogs and cats. Since she came into rescue, she has spent time living with a Collie, two Pit Bulls, a Whippet and several cats with no issues whatsoever.

She is house trained and does great in the house. She is spayed and up to date on all her vaccinations and microchipped. This little girl will do great in any setting, a house, or an apartment, as all she really wants is a family to call her own and a lap to lay her head on.

Wilbur
Spend 5 minutes with Wilbur and fall in love forever! Wilbur is quite simply a wonderful, sweet, gentle 4 1/2 -year-old Schnauzer who loves everyone -- men, women, kids, other dogs. Wilbur is a beautiful guy with a lovely Schnauzer face and classic eyebrows.

He bonds easily with his people and is both calm and lively as the situation warrants. Outside he loves to go for walks, is very good on the leash, and quite mannerly to other neighbors passing by. Inside, he likes to lie in the sun or be beside his people whatever they're doing.

He is very definitely a family dog and great company. He doesn't bark much, but when he is in his "watchdog" mode, he has a deep, assertive bark, otherwise he is not at all "yappy." Wilbur is crate trained and also house-broken. He knows his name and is beautifully groomed. Wilbur is working on commands like "come" and "down" and learning quickly.

He seems to be very intelligent and anxious to learn. He usually comes when called, and he responds to "no." Wilbur is a happy, healthy dog who is neutered, UTD on immunizations, heartworm and Lyme negaitve, and free from fecal parasites. He has great teeth and is current on his heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Wilbur seems to have absolutely no issues -- either behavioral or health-wise.

Put in an application today to meet this extraordinary fellow. Give him the furever home he longs for and so richly deserves. He will flourish in that home immediately and you will have a devoted friend for life!
